Norfolk Real Deal Track Club History Timeline

1991

Club founded by Walt Green and Bruce Manley, and had one girl (Tonya Williams) earn All-American Status in the 400m Hurdles.

1992 Club finished 3rd (Girls 17-18) at the National Age Group Championship. Club had first Individual National AAU Champion (Mike Brown - 800m ). Also, the Boys Cross Country (15-16) team finished 2nd at the AAU National Championship.
1993 Boys Track team (17-18) won the National Age Group Championship, while the Girls’ team finished second. Also, we had 2 National Champions (Jud Sarver – 1500 and Howard Townsend – Cross Country). The Boys Cross Country team Finished 3rd at the Nationals.
1994

1999
Norfolk Real Deal merged with the Atlantic Coast Track Club, and continued the success by winning several National Team and Individual Champions. Also, over 200 students attended College via track scholarships.
2000 The Atlantic Coast Track League was started and "Real Deal", along with seven other Track Clubs, became a charter member. We had one National Champion (Khalif Smith – 110 Hurdles).
2001 Team (boys and girls combined) finished 2nd at the Atlantic Coast Track League Championships. Also, we had one National Champion (Alonzo Moore – Triple Jump)
2002 Team won the Atlantic Coast Track League Championship, and had two National Champions (Yvette Lewis – Triple Jump and Keith Moffatt – High Jump)
2003 Team won the Atlantic Coast Track League Championship for second consecutive year. Also, Lewis and Moffatt successfully defended the National Titles they won in 2002. Moreover, Moffatt won the Pan-Am Junior High Jump Championship.
2004 Lashawn Merritt won the 400m World Junior Title, along with 9 Other National Titles. Merritt was selected Youth Athlete of the Year. Also, Antonio Norvell won the USATF (15-16) title in the Long Jump. The team finished 3rd at the ACTL Championship.
2005
Norfolk Real Deal was recognized as an “USATF Elite Development Club.” Coach Dwayne Miller was selected United Sates Olympic Committee (USOC) Developmental Coach of the Year.
2006

Team won the Atlantic Coast Track League Championship. We had several National Champions (AAU / USATF J.O. & Youth Nationals) – Joel Coleman (100, 400, 800), Shakia Forbes (Long Jump), Nicholas Simmons (High Jump), Neffertiti Smith (Pentathlon & Triple Jump), Marlon Woods (High Jump & Long Jump) & Midget Girls 4 x 100(Gabrielle Smith,Tiffany Ellick,Taranisha Taylor, Alexia Vonner). Also, the Midget boys won the USATF Youth National title & the“Elite Development” female team were runner-ups at the USATF National Club Championship.

2007

Team won the Atlantic Coast Track League Championship.
National Champions – Joel Coleman (100, 400, 800), Walter
Mitchell (400), Youth Boys 4 x 400 (Joel Coleman, Walter Mitchell,
Dominique Kimbrough, Tony Tate), Yvette Lewis (Triple Jump,
100m Hurdles). Also, Aurora Scott qualified for US Jr. National Cross Country Team.

2008 Alumnus, Lashawn Merritt won 2 Gold Medals (400m & 4 x 400 Relay) at the Olympic Games.  Team won the Atlantic Coast Track League Championship for the third consecutive year.  Also, the team won three other major invitational meets – Real Deal Track Classic, Henrico Pacers Invitational, and the VA Beach Flames Invitational.  Additionally, the “Elite Devlopment” female team finished 3rd at the USATF National Club Championship. We had several AAU or USATF National champions – Samaiyah Islam (100Hurdles & MVP @ Club Championship), Tiffany Harris (Long Jump), Wesley Smith (Long Jump), Ja-Vell Bullard (400m), Joel Coleman (200m & 400m), Joshua Stills (Long Jump) & Boys 4 x 400 Relay (Darryl Brickhouse, Sherrard Marrow, Keith Ricks, & Ja-Vell Bullard).

2009 Team won 5 major titles – Atlantic Coast Invitational, Flames Invitational, Real Deal Track Classic, Intermediate Boys Russell Blunt ECI, and Young Women Russell Blunt ECI.  Also, the “Elite Development” Women team finished 3rd at the USATF National Club Championship.  Additionally, our AAU or National Champions were Samaiyah Islam (100m Hurdles), Zakiya Rashid (Discus),  Elizabeth Cornell (1500m), Keilah Tyson (100m), Walt Mitchell (200m),  and  Young Women 4 x 400 Relay (Cassandra Jones, Cydney Robinson, Breanna Dennis, & Champagne Bell).  LaShawn Merritt won 2 Gold Medals @ the World Championship (400m & 4 x 400 Relay), and Keith Ricks (200m) made the USA Jr. Team.  For 2009 complete results, click here.
